Statement by Port Erin Commissioners
The Board of Port Erin Commissioners was surprised to read
the recent comments made by the Chair of Port St Mary Commissioners within the
media this week, referring to ‘amalgamation by stealth’ and ‘political
vandalism’. We would like to make it clear that there
has been no discussion, approach or contact with Port Erin Commissioners
regarding any further collaborative working nor has the matter been discussed by the Port Erin Board.
To
put this into context, Port Erin Commissioners wrote to both Port St
Mary Commissioners and Rushen Parish Commissioners in August 2016 suggesting that a Committee be formed with three
members from each Local Authority to discuss the possibility of starting a process to form one Local Authority and to look into more
immediate joint initiatives to
benefit each Authority. This request was
rejected by both Local Authorities. Port
Erin Commissioners has not discussed the matter since those responses in 2016.
Port St Mary Commissioners and Port Erin Commissioners have operated a joint refuse collection service for
almost 7 years which has demonstrated a great cost benefit to both Local
Authorities. This agreement is currently under
review by PSM Commissioners.
