Port Erin Commissioners has announced that its local
authority rate for the forthcoming financial year 2020-21 will be set at 310p,
an increase of less than 1% from the current rate of 307p.
Following its meeting on 28th January, Port Erin
Commissioners’ Chairman Mr Godfrey Egee announced, “The Board is pleased to confirm
that it has been able to apply an increase of just 0.98% to its local authority
rate for the forthcoming financial year. I’d like to thank the excellent work
by the current Board not just over the past financial year, but over its whole four-year
term to ensure the authority continues to operate efficiently, providing best value
and service for its rate payers. A special mention must also go to our staff
members have worked well delivering the projects and policies of the Board over
this period. During this budget setting process, the Board has faced several
external cost pressures but prudent financial management over recent years has
allowed the majority of those increases to be absorbed.
Our financial position remains healthy and the forthcoming
year’s budget will further draw down on reserves to allow us to pursue further
schemes including improvements to the recreational facilities at Breagle Glen
as well as the delivery of current projects such as a new Commissioners’ works
facility at Breagle Glen, the redevelopment of the Cosy Nook Café and the
creation of a tourism site off Ballafesson Road.
Looking back at the current financial year, the Board is
particularly pleased with the newly refurbished play area in Athol Park which
has been very well received and the joint working arrangements with Malew
Parish Commissioners have progressed very well, expanding to cover other tasks such
as street cleaning, recycling collections and some aspects of procurement."
Mr Egee concluded by adding, "The Board remains
committed to ensuring that Port Erin continues to be a great place to live,
work and visit.”
