The History The George Herdman Memorial Library in Port Erin was founded by Professor William A. Herdman and his wife, Mrs Herdman. They set this library up in memory of their son, Second-Lieutenant George Andrew Herdman, who was killed during the Battle of the Somme during 1916. The building was bought and renovated by Professor Herman and gifted to Port Erin Commissioners in 1916. The building was originally located on Shore Road, however, later relocated to its current location on Orchard Walk in Port Erin. The library’s reading room contains a memorial plaque along with photographs of Herdman, his mother and his father. Find out more about the history of the library by clicking HERE |
