Port Erin Commissioners has announced that its local
authority rate for the forthcoming financial year 2019-20 will be set at 307p,
an increase of 1.66% or 5p from the current rate of 302p. The average household
will see its annual rate demand increase by £6.
Following its meeting on 29th January, Port Erin
Commissioners’ Chairman Mr Nick Watterson announced, “The Board is pleased to
report that it continues to operate efficiently and continually strives to
provide value for money and service improvements for its rate payers. Much has
been achieved over the current financial year with the new sports equipment on
the beach proving successful, events in Port Erin being well attended and the
decorative lighting installed through Athol Park being well received. The
overall cleanliness and maintenance of the village is a credit to the great
work of our employees. A public Wi-Fi has been introduced in the central area
around Port Erin Railway Station and additional electric vehicle charging
points have been installed on Shore Road. The Board also entered into an
agreement with Malew Parish Commissioners to jointly purchase and operate a
refuse collection vehicle which is scheduled to come into service in June of
this year.
Our reserves remain healthy and the forthcoming year’s
budget will draw down on these to allow us to pursue several exciting schemes.
This will see us invest in new recreational facilities within Athol Park, the
development a new Commissioners’ works facility at Breagle Glen, the
redevelopment of the Cosy Nook Café and subject to planning, the creation of a
tourism site off Ballafesson Road.
As of 1st April 2019, we are offering free
membership of The George Herdman Library to all Island residents. The library
is an excellent resource with free to use Wi-Fi, computers, audio books and an
excellent children’s section.”
Mr Watterson concluded by adding, "I must thank my
fellow Board members, all the staff at Port Erin Commissioners and everybody
else who has contributed to continue to make Port Erin a great place live, work
and visit. The Regeneration Scheme is proving to have a positive legacy with
new businesses opening and the Board welcomes the continued inward investment
to Port Erin with several key sites, such as the former Marine Biological
Station and former Grosvenor Hotel, recently being acquired for development.
A special mention should also be made to the local business
owners who continue to actively promote Port Erin, offer local employment and
an excellent choice of outlets for residents & visitors and it is great to
see so many customers choosing to support them by shopping locally.”
